Pre-production on a project can mean many things. It can mean concept development, location scouting, budget breakdown, storyboarding, casting, production scheduling, permits and releases, in short, everything that needs to be done before the cameras “roll.” Production is usually defined as the photography and audio recording of the basic material of the project. Post-production includes things such as editing picture & sound, addition of a music track & sound effects, graphic design and special effects, titling, formatting for distribution (DVD, the web, or for public screenings/tv), packaging, advertising, and retail sales.
